What Is "Volkssport"?

Volkssports are family-oriented, noncompetitive events. They are casual, though well-organized adventures in health, recreation, fellowship and fun. Volkssports evolved to be non-competitive from running races in Germany and have spread to 28 other countries. (Volks means folks, and 'folks' means all of us.) Join us!

Volksmarching got its name from its origins in Germany. Today there are thousands of Volkssport clubs around the world, allied in the International Volkssport Federation, the IVV, and here in the United States the AVA. Find out more about the origins and volkssporting movement below.

Germania of Poughkeepsie Volkssport invites all to join Germania in these fun Germania Volksporting activities.

Picture perfect Fall day for our “Poet’s Walk” outing in Red Hook.
Over hills and dales, through the woods and crossing streams, we enjoyed our time together as always and as we continue to keep healthy with fresh air and exercise!

4 for 4.4mi on Silvermine Trail, Harriman State Park

Our quartet of hikers had a great time on our sometimes challenging yet Moderately Rated hike on Saturday 10/6.

Misty at times adding an enchanting air to our walk, we referred to our compass and maps, traversed brooks and climbed ridges for a very gratifying Trail completion.

Kudos to all for great sportsmanship!

Today’s Sam’s Point Loop and Ice Caves Roads Hike was well worth the time it took to get into the busy parking area.
A beautiful day and always stunning views were our reward.

Today’s picture perfect weather made for a great Volksmarch Walk at Innisfree Gardens in Millbrook today.
With our Germania President Bill and his First Lady Sylvia our group enjoyed the guided portion of trail as lifelong Naturalist George Petty shared his knowledge of the Garden’s many plant species as well as the Beck’s vision of a “Cup Garden” design.

We continued on around the lake and found many lovely surprises at every turn both floral and fauna.

We hope more Members, Friends and Families will join us on Sunday 22 July for our next Walk at Sam’s Point where trail is moderate with berries for picking!

Details to follow on our Website so check back soon and save the date!

Our small group of Volksmarch Members attending today’s 4.43mi Walk had a most lovely time enjoying the comfortable temperatures and interesting Sculptures of Storm King Art Center.

Our leisurely stroll was filled with good conversation and fun stories as each installment offered it’s own interpretation.

A bit of wildlife viewing included Summer wildflowers, Canadian geese families and pair of young coyote pups found in the South Fields which the Center saw to their safety.

We look forward to our next walk in June with details to follow.

It couldn’t have been a nicer day as my Mom and Dad’s Jeep crossed the Mid Hudson Bridge on Earth Day 2018.  I was so excited to start my first volksmarch with Germania, and help survey our newly adopted section of the Steinhouse trail.

I got to meet lots of new Germania friends and there was  no shortage of puppy pats!  Everyone was in great spirits, oh and there was of course lots of smelling to do..and treats.  I finally I got to meet Silvia and Sandy. Us two Hunds are sure to become the best of pals.  I can’t wait till the our next volksmarch!

Our growing Volksmarch group had a wonderful time today on our 2.8mi hike around the grounds of the Vanderbilt Estate in Hyde Park.

From the Mansion down to the River and along the Carriage Trail, the cool weather made for a refreshing time out on this partly sunny and breezy day.
Great friendships are growing and we look forward to seeing each other on our next hike and welcoming more new Hikers as well!
Watch our Website for more details about Sunday 4/22/18 Earth Day local Dutchess Rail Trail walk.
See you all there and thank you for Joining!

A lovely time was had by all at today’s Volksmarching Club Inaugural hike at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
The weather was ideal and Bald Eagle were sighted early on and during hike.
This approximately 2 mile 1.5hr debut outing was sometimes challenging (16 floors climbed!) but was successfully, leisurely and enjoyably completed by all.
Other level paths were and will always be available on future meets for all levels of ability.
Thank you all for joining us and hope more will in the future!
We look forward to our next outing to the Vanderbilt Estate in Hyde Park on Sunday, April 8 at 1:00pm.
